History of Society of Old Salts

About Society of Old Salts (S.O.S.).

The Society of Old Salts (S.O.S.) is comprised of Lakeside Chautauqua's waterfront caretakers and supporters of the Lakeside Sailing Center.

S.O.S. was founded in 1991 by 26 family members. Today, the organization has approximately 300 members. The mission of S.O.S. is to provide the resources for a safe, enjoyable, and comfortable sailing club with a commitment toward continuous improvement. Members contribute the finances and countless volunteer hours to fulfill its mission.

For decades, parents have taught their children to sail. Their children have taught their children, and so on. The S.O.S. strives to keep the Lakeside tradition of Lake Erie sailing alive and well for generations of Lakeside sailors young and old, male and female.

Greg Holzaepfel to serve as SOS Treasurer

Greg has accepted the officer position of Treasurer. Welcome aboard, Greg!

SOS Volunteer Day - Saturday, May 16

Help us get the Sailing Center and Lakeside and SOS watercraft ready for the upcoming summer season!  Meet at the Sailing Center at 10:00 AM on Saturday, May 16.  We're planning to work on tasks such as inspecting Lakeside and SOS boats to see what needs to be repaired or scrapped, inspecting life vests, inflating paddleboards, and a general clean-up of the storage areas.  Bring brooms, buckets, and anything else that might be helpful.  Much of the work will be done indoors, so this event will be held regardless of the weather.

Please RSVP by sending an email to Nancy Brucken, so we can get an idea of how many people are likely to attend.

VERY IMPORTANT:  Lakeside requires all volunteers to complete a background check before participating in any activities.  Please go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/88M8Y6V as soon as possible, and complete the form (it will only take a few minutes).  For volunteer opportunity, indicate "Other", and specify "SOS Volunteer Day" in the box.

Mike Wyatt, Regatta Manager; [email protected]; 440-478-8208

Entrants will be assigned to a team/boat, and a small fee of $15/entrant is needed to help cover the WRMYC costs for holding this event.  Please reach out to Mike Wyatt prior to June 15th so that the WRMYC knows how many boats/teams will be participating.

SOS and Lakeside are providing logistical support, and anyone interested in just helping out please contact Mike Haas, SOS President, at [email protected]; 724-331-6528
