2025 SOS President's Message
The main activities that SOS does during the summer, such as the Big Boat races, Mouse Island race, Mouse Island Challenge, Kids Setting Sail, and the Regatta all went well. That being said, we continue to look to improve these activities, promote SOS, and enhance the Lakeside waterfront experience. While we are sad to see the departure of Katalin, who truly supported SOS and the waterfront, we look forward to working with her replacement to keep these events going strong.
This summer, Nancy Brucken and I manned a table at the Lakeside Opportunity Fair promoting SOS, offering SOS embroidered hats for sale ($20 each) and displaying a new SOS banner. In addition, I represented SOS at meetings held by Lakeside regarding the short-lived NCA proposal and continue to support efforts to keep our waterfront areas well-maintained as part of Lakeside's capital asset review.
We are grateful to Bill Maenner for beginning the process of replacing the aging storage racks. To date about 24 racks have been fully replaced. With the help of Ed Caner, we added a new sailboat, a SOL, which has a larger cockpit than a Sunfish, yet uses the same rigging. The company that provided the SOL is also doing a professional refurbishment of some existing Sunfish. Finally, we added a new weather station, funded by Mike Loyer and made operational by David Maenner.
While we are grateful to Lakeside for completing the West Shoreline Erosion Project, we are looking at ways to help Lakeside add a second walkway to the path between the wall and the rip-rap. This second entrance would be located near the Beebe memorial, so that users need not walk through the waterfront area to enjoy the path.
We look forward to a fun and eventful 2025. See you on the water!

Kids Set Sailing (KSS) Update
This was the 21st year of operation for the Society of Old Salts' sponsored Kids Setting Sail Program which was designed to introduce young people to sailing by means of a short ride on a Sunfish sailboat with an experienced sailor. The program operates on Sunday afternoons from 2:30 to 4:30. We took out 519 riders over the 12-week season for a total of 11,189 riders to date. Over 40 KSS volunteers, with an age range from 14 to 87, worked to make this program possible this year- thank you all! The 2024 program is scheduled to start on Sunday, June 16, weather permitting.
If you'd like to help out, either on shore, in the water, or on a boat, come by the Sailing Center at 2:15 PM. We'll give rides from 2:30-4:30 PM, or until we run out of riders.
